July Health Month- National Minority Mental Health Awareness

Hey Sisters! July’s health month is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Minority groups can face certain unique challenges related to mental health. Minority groups are less likely to receive mental health treatments as well. Asian Americans in 2018 were reported as 60 percent less likely to receive mental health treatment. However mental health being very stigmatized is not just to blame for the lack of treatment but the lack of health insurance as well. Economic and social inequality can affect access to certain resources. Resources like mental health treatment.


So how does this affect your sisters? Well SWAS wants to make sure you are okay. Take time this summer to not only get ahead academically but also rest. As someone who is very driven and constantly feels unproductive when not working on something academic it has been hard for me to relax. With standardized testing like the SAT and ACT studying for everything can sometimes feel like it is building up.


I am also approaching senior year in September, so College applications are right around the corner. It gets hard to sleep at night or even enjoy leisurely activities with all this stress. What I recommend to you sisters is that you journal. I love writing so journaling has been my saving grace. I write what I am stressing about and how a particular day made me feel. There is this amazing type of journaling coined the name shadow work. Shadow work journals are journal entries where you can begin to understand your unconscious mind. Our unconscious mind rules our daily behavior, and it is important to understand why we do something or why we feel certain ways. Some shadow work journal prompts I recommend that you write are:
