Black History Month

Happy Black History Month!! I think Black History Month is a time when we can both acknowledge those who have come before us but also in the process empower ourselves now. As the black community, we have come a long way from shackles to the white house. However, such a change does not come without consequences. Some still view us as inadequate and second-class humans which leads to many inequalities. Inequalities such as poor healthcare outcomes because of systemic injustice.

In class, I am writing a research paper on the history of Blacks mistreatment in healthcare that affects our outcomes today. Many factors contribute to our low outcomes however Sisters with a Stethoscope is here to solve one of these: representation. Doctors and healthcare providers cannot look at a patient if they are unable to diagnose them. Many African Americans are misdiagnosed as our symptoms are presented differently compared to other patients.

Not only that but many patients don't feel seen in their healthcare providers as Black doctors make up only 5.7%  and Black women 2.8% of all doctors. We are here to change that whether you want to be a doctor, nurse, physician assistant, or any other healthcare professional we are here to support you become a sister today and know that you are taking a step in solving healthcare Inequalities. Our ancestors would be proud of all of you.
